The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 has published a report into LOCOG’s procurement process and how they will deliver sustainable procurement.
The report finds that LOCOG put in significant work over the summer of 2009 to ensure that it has plans and processes in place to address sustainability in its procurement as it ramps up throughout 2010.
Shaun McCarthy, Chair of the Commission, said: “As a new, yet temporary, organisation LOCOG is unique in that it largely has a fresh supply chain to develop which, on the face of it, represents a significant unrivalled opportunity in respect to sustainable procurement. There are, however, significant challenges facing the organisation. These include sponsorship rights, the sheer diversity and volume of its supply chain, inability to offer repeat business and of course, time.”
“Whilst carrying out this review during May/June 2009 we were concerned that LOCOG was not yet ready to face these significant challenges and we escalated this issue to senior management in June 2009. We were advised of planned changes within LOCOG and by September 2009 many of our concerns expressed in spring/summer 2009 had been addressed.”
In addition, since the completion of this review, LOCOG has published the second edition of its Sustainable Sourcing Code. The Commission is pleased to see that this has taken on board many of the comments it made about the Code in the review and will assist in addressing recommendations 2 and 3 in the report.
Shaun McCarthy said: “LOCOG will still face challenges in ensuring that all the goods and services it procures, the merchandise it licenses and the partners it brings on board all meet its sustainability standards, but the processes and plans it has put in place are set up to meet these challenges.”
