Commission for a Sustainable London 2012

History

The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 has emerged from the work initially undertaken by the Mayor’s London Sustainable Development Commission.

In 2003, the London Sustainable Development Commission undertook a comprehensive assessment of the 2012 bid using its Sustainable Development Framework for London.

The key message provided to the bid team was the need to address social, economic and environmental issues in a joined-up way and to look at how these benefits could be secured after the Games to London and particularly East London.

In 2004, a Sub-Group of the commissioners focussed its attention on the Games bid.

The Sub-Group helped make sustainable development a centrepiece of the London 2012 bid and has continued to provide guidance and direction since the bid win.

Most recently the Sub-Group, chaired by Shaun McCarthy and made up of Commissioners Dr Robin Stott, Paul de Zylva and Craig Cordice, has assisted in developing the assurance framework for the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012.

The formation of a new commission recognises the size and complexity of providing assurance across the entire London Games programme. The new commission will build on the good work already undertaken, to help make sure the sustainability goals in the bid become a reality.
