Assurance
The Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 will help deliver the most sustainable Games to date, by providing independent assurance and expert commentary, direct to the Olympic Board.
Going beyond simply providing feedback on annual reports, the role of the commission will be dynamic and will build on the work already undertaken by the London Sustainable Development Commission’s 2012 Sub-Group.
By assessing the sustainability of the 2012 programme relevant policies, procedures and performance, the commission will identify good practice and areas for improvement, assess risks and make recommendations to the Olympic Board. For instance, it will be able to tell the Olympic Board whether the Olympic Park is on track to meet its carbon and energy targets. In addition, it will provide a valuable source of expertise to help the delivery bodies meet their objectives.
While the commission will act as a ‘critical friend’ and provide a credible point of reference for its Olympic partners, it will not set the sustainable development targets or deliver the outcomes. The 2012 Olympic bodies will be accountable for demonstrating that specific sustainable development objectives are being achieved.
The commission will underpin its assurance of the 2012 Games programme with the sustainability principles of the UK Sustainable Development Strategy, Securing the Future, and the London Sustainable Development Commission’s, a Sustainable Development Framework for London.
