Sustainability and 2012

Commission for a Sustainable London 2012Sustainable development is much more than the latest environmental catchphrase or just about thinking green.

Sustainable development is broadly about addressing social, economic and environmental issues in the round, always considering how decisions will affect current and future generations.

By using a win-win-win approach, good sustainable development practices minimise negative impacts while optimising the positive elements of the development.

The principles and practices of sustainable development can be applied across the staging, delivery and legacy of the London Games, across areas such as water, biodiversity, energy and climate change, skills and employment, health and wellbeing, waste and materials, access and inclusion.

The Games organisers want them to be a catalyst for one of the most extensive urban and environmental regeneration programmes ever seen in the UK. The new Olympic Park under construction in the Lower Lea Valley aims to revive a neglected part of East London, create thousands of jobs, transform transport links and build thousands of homes.

Sustainable development and the London Games means making the most out of the social, economic and environmental benefits that will come with hosting such a major sporting and cultural event and creating a legacy for the future.
