The commission released a brochure at its launch on 23 January 2007 to provide information about its role, duties, membership and its 2012 legacy vision. Commission for a Sustainable London 2012: Assuring a Legacy [PDF 139K].

I am committed to ensuring that the 2012 London Games sets a benchmark for future Olympics by achieving the highest sustainability standards that will deliver a lasting social, environmental and economic legacy long after the 2012 Games are over.

Under Shaun's leadership, I am confident that the commission will oversee a comprehensive sustainable assurance programme that will ensure Londoners and the rest of the UK reap the benefits from the 2012 Games for generations to come.

I want London 2012 to be a beacon for sustainability, leaving a lasting legacy not only in London but throughout the UK. The commission will provide invaluable independent scrutiny as well as offering expert feedback and guidance to the Olympic Board as the ultimate decision making body for the 2012 Games.

Setting up this independent body to hold the 2012 partners to account demonstrates we are serious about turning the economic, social and environmental goals set out in the Olympic bid into reality.
